Every Breath Counts Foundation Hosts First Ever Walk, Shop & Brunch for Lung Cancer Awareness

On November 7, 2009 over 300 people attended the Every Breath Counts Foundation's first ever Walk, Shop & Brunch for Lung Cancer Awareness to raise awareness and funding for lung cancer research and support programs. This debut event took place at the Pier Shops at Caesar's in Atlantic City.

"This event is really the first of its kind," said Lois Shohen-Brown, President of the Every Breath Counts Foundation and lung cancer survivor. "We know that to win the battle against lung cancer we need love, camaraderie and caring. This event is a unique way for us to help beat lung cancer by recruiting additional suport from the community with a fun social event. We are already looking forward to next year!"

Joe McNally, President of the South Jersey Cancer Fund, Will Furtado, Advocacy Specialist for the Lung Cancer Alliance and Assemblyman Vince Polistino all spoke prior to the walk.

Walkers organized at Game On and had the opportunity to walk and shop the fabulous stores at the Pier to show they are united in the fight against lung cancer. A decadent brunch was held at Game On after the walk, and participants had the opportunity to enter the drawing for unique raffle prizes in support of the Every Breath Counts Foundation.

Each year over 219,440 Americans are diagnosed with lung cancer and without the development of new diagnostic and treatment methods 85% will die within five years.  There will be an estimated 159,000 deaths from lung cancer, accounting for more cancer deaths than from colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined.  In fact, lung cancer is responsible for nearly 1/3 of all cancer deaths.  Atlantic and Cape May Counties have the highest incidences of lung cancer in the state of New Jersey.

The proceeds from this event go directly to three lung cancer-focused organizations;

  • The South Jersey Cancer Fund, directing funds to patients and families in the South Jersey Shore area affected by this disease
  • The LUNGevity Foundation, the only foundation dedicated exclusively to funding lung cancer research
  • The Lung Cancer Alliance, the only national non-profit organization dedicated to providing patient support and advocacy to those living with or at risk for the disease.
